This is a vigorous upright, red leafed cultivar of Japanese maple. 'Atropurpureum' has a finer texture than the well known 'Bloodgood', as the five, to seven lobed leaves on this selection are fairly deeply divided. The maroon red foliage grows deeper over time, and ends the season in a burst of brilliant scarlet.
