'Emperor 1' is rapidly surpassing 'Bloodgood' as the favourite red leafed Japanese maple on the market today. It is a vigorous grower, with large, deep red foliage that retains colour, even in shade. It is better equipped to avoid damage from late frosts, since it is later to leaf out in spring. Autumn colour brightens to vibrant crimson red. Leaf drop in autumn, exposes blackish red bark.
