This is the European Hornbeam, a classic tree of formal and informal gardens in Europe. Its densely branched symmetrical form allows it to be used as both a specimen tree or as a broad hedge or screen if planted in rows. The mid green leaves have an almost pleated look, due to the prominent, impressed veining.
