The Common Quince, Cydonia oblonga, is a highly ornamental shrub or small tree, that produces some of the most fragrant fruit in the northern hemisphere. Dark green ovate leaves are downy grey-green on emergence, and retain a downy underside. Large apple blossom-like blooms appear in mid spring. In the case of 'Cookes Jumbo', these mature into exceptionally large oddly pear shaped edible greenish-yellow fruit, that is ideal for use in jams, jellies, pies and tarts.
