While most perennials are grown for their flowers or foliage, the most striking feature of Geum triflorum ('Prairie Smoke', or 'Old Man's Whiskers'), are the upright feathery plumed seed heads, that give the plant its common names. This North American native is an interesting addition to the rock garden or informal borders
